Obesity Double In United States Compared To Europe

Recent research now shows that twice as many adults in the United States are obese compared to adults in Europe. About 33 percent of Americans are obese, compared with 17 percent in ten European countries reviewed.

Obesity, as past research has shown, leads to a number of other diseases including cancer, diabetes and others. This also increases our health care costs dramatically and they are directly tied to the ‘obesity factor’.

Our health care expenditures related to obesity range from $100-150 billion per year and the costs are only rising. Why does this continue? The research’s author commented “It is possible that we spend more on health care because we are, indeed, less healthy.”

That’s true, and only there is only one solution: taking responsibility for our own health. Watching what we eat, getting active and keeping a positive outlook on our lives. This is sometimes a challenge in today’s fast paced, every busier world, although it’s a choice. A choice we all make by either doing something about it or just letting things happen and then ending up in the hospital, bankrupt, or possibly an early death.

Life is a wonderful gift, take care of yours.

To your best health!

Dads Responsible For Fat Children

In a recent study by Australian child health experts, they reported that the father was most responsible for having overweight children in the family.

Specifically, if a father was not involved in their children’s lives, and/or didn’t establish clear boundaries, they were more likely to have overweight children. Those fathers that did establish clear boundaries for their children overall had children with lower BMI (body mass index).

The study noted that this indicates a needed focus on the entire family, not just one or the other parent.

Additionally, it was noted that 40% of mothers and 60% of fathers of the overweight children were overweight themselves.

This study shows how teaching children where to set boundaries in their lives, as well as being a good example are key components to healthy children. I see it in my daughter everyday. She watches me closely and wants to do and eat the way I do … if I choose poorly, so will she. Big responsibility and I’m glad to have it to be able to share the benefits of healthy living with my daughter. Perhaps it will change her life and all those she touches throughout her life. Small actions, big impact.

To your best health!
