Mediterranean Diet Helps Children’s Health

Not surprisingly, a study from the National Heart and Lung Institute of London reported that a diet high in fruit and vegetable consumption, as found in the Mediterranean diet, helps keep allergies away in children.

The researchers interviewed 700 children aged 7-18 and found that those eating a diet high in fresh fruits and vegetables had 60% less allergies than those that ate fewer amounts. Out of the study, 80% of the children at fresh fruit daily and 2/3 of those ate fresh vegetables as well.

Eating nuts also decreased additional allergic symptoms the study reported. The children in the study that ate nuts at least 3 times a week reported fewer specific allergic symptoms.

This indicates, as most all research does, that an increased consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables is important to maintain good health. I also suspect that allergies decreased since the Mediterranean diet is lower in consumption of dairy products. Dairy products are highly congesting and proven to cause allergies. The SAD (standard American diet) normally is high in dairy product consumption. Your mom was right, eat those fruits and vegetables!

Dads Responsible For Fat Children

In a recent study by Australian child health experts, they reported that the father was most responsible for having overweight children in the family.

Specifically, if a father was not involved in their children’s lives, and/or didn’t establish clear boundaries, they were more likely to have overweight children. Those fathers that did establish clear boundaries for their children overall had children with lower BMI (body mass index).

The study noted that this indicates a needed focus on the entire family, not just one or the other parent.

Additionally, it was noted that 40% of mothers and 60% of fathers of the overweight children were overweight themselves.

This study shows how teaching children where to set boundaries in their lives, as well as being a good example are key components to healthy children. I see it in my daughter everyday. She watches me closely and wants to do and eat the way I do … if I choose poorly, so will she. Big responsibility and I’m glad to have it to be able to share the benefits of healthy living with my daughter. Perhaps it will change her life and all those she touches throughout her life. Small actions, big impact.

Severe Obesity Fastest Growing Segment

A recent study showed the severe obesity, those with a BMI of 40 or higher is the fastest growing segment of those that are overweight.

The study reveals that this segment grew by 50 percent from 2000 to 2005, twice as fast as those with just moderate obesity.

Report Author Roland Sturn, from the non-profit research organization RAND, noted, “The proportion of people at the high end of the weight scale continues to increase at a brisk rate despite increased public attention on the risks of obesity and the increased use of drastic weight loss strategies, such as bariatric surgery.”

He also noted that this “was not a rare condition among certain genetically vulnerable people but, rather, is an integral part of the U.S. population’s weight distribution.”

Obesity in general is a lifestyle disease that leads to other diseases and illness, and eventually premature death. It’s preventable through simple lifestyle changes.
