Hello,
I'm an employee of WFM and find much of your article to be true. A few points I want to clarify include: "most WF employees are not educated in health or the benefits of certain foods." I started at WFM shortly after you wrote this article, and solid training on healthy eating/organics is included in our initial training. If you mean most employees don't have formal education in this area, I would ask whether YOU would work in a grocery store with this education behind you. ;) In any case, yes, there are employees who are just there for the job (it's a grocery store, mind you) but if you look, there are some who genuinely want to give advice and help with life changes, myself included.

Hi Ang,

Thanks for your comments. Actually studies I've reviewed show that just one bite of a processed food can change your body and health. All the items you mentioned are processed and it's been proven by science (and eventually by common sense and experience) that they are all unhealthy.

Can you eat them and still be healthy?
Relatively, sure. Just like you can still live taking in a 'little' poison every day (in fact, most of us do that every day if we live in the US or most any developed country... there are chemicals and carcinogens in our environment, food, water, clothing, detergents, packaging, cars, computers, cell phones... most anything man made). But a little poison every day does not give you optimal health. Eating just one pizza changes your appetite, cravings, moods, energy, thoughts, internal chemistry... just from that one meal. It sets off a chain reaction that often leads you to eat more processed foods and the reason why you don't want to eat them to begin with. You just need to eat one chocolate ball to get a craving for another... most can't stop at just one since processed and cooked food is addictive. It's made that way so you buy more and more of it... and bring more and more profit to the company making it.

Bottom line, eating processed food is an addiction. And any addiction is unhealthy. Just try to stop eating one of your favorite 'processed' foods. How easy is it? Without major willpower it's often difficult until you release the emotional attachment to food in general, and avoid processed foods so your body cleans out and enjoys and looks forward to fresh fruits and vegetables, our natural and most healthy food.

Just one bite can change everything. That's how powerful processed foods are. One bite brings back all those tastes, smells, feelings, flavors... unhealthy as they may be, and you start to crave them again.

Yes, being active will help, but you're still not optimizing your health by eating anything processed. You can say you're a bit healthier, but do you want to be just a little healthier? Or do you want to be in the best health possible? To be able to accomplish what you want in your life, be the best you can be and feel the best you can be?

No food (like chocolate balls) can give you energy. You get energy from sleep and rest. Have you ever eaten a meal and jumped up and said 'I have so much energy I want to run a marathon!' (or go running, climbing, basketball, etc)? No, you always feel like resting after a meal because digestion of food is one of the most energy intensive activities your body does. And especially when you eat any processed foods (like the ones mentioned), your body works even harder on the digestion process, using a majority of your available energy depending on the types of food you eat. Yes, food is a one source of nutrition that powers your body although sleep and rest is what gives you energy. When do most people run? And when do they most often run races, marathons, etc? First thing in the morning after a long fast (not eating) and when you have the most energy after resting all night. Of course, eating the most natural and nutrient dense foods will allow your body to perform better with more energy. Processed foods will degrade your health and allow your body less energy since the extra energy needed to digest the processed foods will deplete excess energy and block your body with extra fillers that will also cause your body to work harder, leaving less energy for you to use.

Nothing processed can be truly considered health food, and none of the items mentioned above can be considered healthy. Not only my opinion, ask any natural health practitioner that understands healthy foods. Or try finding a book that has listed any of these foods as healthy. You won't find them.

All the best for your health!
re: Are smoked sausage, turkey pizza, frozen lasagna, cheese burritos, egg salad, gelato, chicken salad, chocolate balls, chicken and rice soup, Haagen Daz ice cream… all health foods?

yes they all are (in my opinion), it is only depend on how ppl sees it and how much they would include it in their diet; it will nt became a healthy food if people eat those every days or every second days..one e.g. that could be healthy...such as chocolate balls, it give you strength and energy. also what about if those people who is very active in their lifestyle and had chocolate included in snack time to boost their enegy? is that considered as unhealthy as well??
