How To Reduce Your Risk of Cantaloupe Salmonella Poisoning
The FDA today announced a risk of salmonella poisoning in cantaloupe imported from Honduras. The risk is highest in small children and older adults with weak or compromised immune symptoms. Even if you’ve eaten contaminated fruit, most with uncompromised immune systems will not feel the effects.
The recommendation is to throw this Honduran cantaloupe away or confirm that you only eat the unbruised, fresh parts and keep them refrigerated.
The best way to lower your risk of food poisoning in all foods (and better your health overall) is to purchase organically grown foods, or even better, locally grown organic or pesticide-free produce. Wash produce before eating, keep it refrigerated before using and eat when ripe and fresh.
Buying local and organic doesn’t guarantee to avoid all food poisoning, but chances that it would happen are significantly lower. Most every food recall in history has been for conventionally grown foods since local and organic growers tend to grow and handle the foods in a healthier manner, avoiding the growing and handling methods that may allow salmonella and other food contaminants to exist and spread.
To your best health!
