Do You Eat Like Most Families Throughout The World

Posted on June 20th, 2007 in diet, eating habits, food, fruits and vegetables, processed foods | No Comments »

TIME Magazine recently ran a photo story portraying the weekly diets of 15 families around the world. How interesting it was to see what other families throughout the world eat, and how much they pay for their weekly groceries.

I noticed something interesting throughout the photos.

Most all the families included soda in their diets, even families in Cairo, Egypt drank some type of soda. Notice also how much packaged food most families eat, it's amazing. But the most interesting fact was the TINY percentage of fresh fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds most families included in their diets. I was surprised to see this, noting that even families in Greece (who are normally known for their healthy Mediterranean diets) were eating 'Frosted Flakes' and stocking up on the soda. It's America exporting it's 'SAD' diet throughout the world, and not surprisingly, the health problems associated with them.

View the TIME photo essay and see for yourself.

Is it me, or do you notice a difference in how healthy a family looks compared to their diet?

Our friends, the Talifero family decided to include themselves in this photo essay. Notice the difference in what they eat and how they look compared to the other families.

If only 1 in 10 families would increase the amount of fresh produce in their diets, it would automatically better their health and reduce the amount of packaging and waste they go through every week. Start with a goal of 50% and work your way up to 80%, or ideally 100%. For some 100% may be unrealistic... just make it a goal to eat most of your diet consisting of fresh fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds. What a difference that alone would make. What can you do?

Dads Responsible For Fat Children

Posted on May 28th, 2007 in children, diet, eating habits, food, obesity, parents, research | No Comments »

In a recent study by Australian child health experts, they reported that the father was most responsible for having overweight children in the family.

Specifically, if a father was not involved in their children's lives, and/or didn't establish clear boundaries, they were more likely to have overweight children. Those fathers that did establish clear boundaries for their children overall had children with lower BMI (body mass index).

The study noted that this indicates a needed focus on the entire family, not just one or the other parent.

Additionally, it was noted that 40% of mothers and 60% of fathers of the overweight children were overweight themselves.

This study shows how teaching children where to set boundaries in their lives, as well as being a good example are key components to healthy children. I see it in my daughter everyday. She watches me closely and wants to do and eat the way I do ... if I choose poorly, so will she. Big responsibility and I'm glad to have it to be able to share the benefits of healthy living with my daughter. Perhaps it will change her life and all those she touches throughout her life. Small actions, big impact.

Severe Obesity Fastest Growing Segment

Posted on April 12th, 2007 in diet, eating habits, obesity, research | No Comments »

A recent study showed the severe obesity, those with a BMI of 40 or higher is the fastest growing segment of those that are overweight.

The study reveals that this segment grew by 50 percent from 2000 to 2005, twice as fast as those with just moderate obesity.

Report Author Roland Sturn, from the non-profit research organization RAND, noted, "The proportion of people at the high end of the weight scale continues to increase at a brisk rate despite increased public attention on the risks of obesity and the increased use of drastic weight loss strategies, such as bariatric surgery."

He also noted that this "was not a rare condition among certain genetically vulnerable people but, rather, is an integral part of the U.S. population's weight distribution."

Obesity in general is a lifestyle disease that leads to other diseases and illness, and eventually premature death. It's preventable through simple lifestyle changes.
