<description>Great tips! What a great reminder that much of what we can do to lower our risk of breast cancer can be simple, and even free!

Just a reminder with regards to sun exposure. Most sunscreens block absorption of vitamin D. It might make sense to spend a little time outdoors before applying the sunscreen. After all, in 1935 when our grandparents sent everyone out for a healthy dose of sun, and when sunscreen was not yet available, the risk of melanoma was one in 1200. It is now one in 84. They practiced common sense and came inside or covered themselves up after that healthy dose!

One other tip. Women who sleep less than 7 hours per night are more likely to develop breast cancer. Sleeping in total darkness may also help. Blind women have a very low risk of breast cancer, whereas those who work night shifts have been shown in some studies to have an elevated risk. It is felt that melatonin manufactured by the brain in total darkness may have an anti-estrogen effect.
