Just ran across an interesting statistic about the true cost of eating meat, specifically hamburgers.
“Producing a quarter pound of hamburger requires 100 gallons of water, 1.2 lbs. of feed grain and energy equal to a cup of gasoline, causes the loss of 1.25 lbs. of topsoil and causes greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to a 6-mile drive in a typical U.S. car. The average person in the United States consumes 260 lbs. of meat per year, most of it hamburgers.” (Source: United Nations Population Fund)
So what does it –really– cost each time you buy a burger for $1.99 ? And who’s paying the rest of the tab?
Put aside the health implications of eating meat, from causing dozens of cancers to an untold number of different diseases, is it worth the price?
Personally, I’ve never felt worse after eating a hamburger… sluggish, tired, belching, bloated, constipated, depressed. Where is the pleasure in that? I’ve never seen anyone jump up, full of life, excited, raring to go after eating a hamburger. Have you?

A study published in the New England Journal of Medicine shows that yes, if your friends or those that you surround yourself with are obese, you are more likely to be obese as well. Watch out!
The study included over 12,000 participants and showed that if a subject had a friend that was obese, they had a 57% higher chance of becoming obese themselves. That number went up to 171% if both friends identified each other as strong friends. Friendship seemed to be the strongest correlation and it didn’t matter how far apart the friends were. Influence of siblings was also ranked highly with a 40% higher chance of becoming obese if another sibling was also obese.
The lesson here is one that just like any other goal, surround yourself by those that you’d like to become more like. In your finances for example, you normally make about the average income of your 5 closest friends and this transfers to your health and other parts of your life as well. Want to be healthier? Surround yourself with happy, healthy and positive minded friends and experiences!

If you value your health, probably the last place you’ll want to go is to a hospital. (unless it’s a life or death emergency of course)
Here’s why.
A relative recently admitted herself to the hospital because she had trouble breathing (she’s in her 90’s). While in the hospital, here is what she was offered to eat over a one and a half day period:
She has difficulties with her digestion and elimination and when she was admitted, that information was given to the nurses. Of course after the first day of eating these foods, she couldn’t have a bowel movement and spent most of the day in the bathroom trying!
Where are the fresh fruits, vegetables and greens that have the needed fiber to allow you to eliminate easily? Why would a hospital, entrusted to ‘care for your health’ provide such unhealthy meals? Aren’t the benefits of fresh fruits, vegetables and greens available to hospitals and health care facilities? This diet alone will shorten your life if not kill you! Certainly not a ‘healthy’ place to eat.
It baffles me that in this day and age with the common knowledge of the risks of increased animal food consumption along with processed foods that they are almost exclusively what are offered to patients who already have health issues to begin with.
This, in addition to the recent statistics that revealed over 100,000 people die every year from infections acquired while at the hospital as well as approximately 750,000 people dying each year at the hands of our health care system.. and doctors and health care facilities labeled as the third leading cause of death in America.

They are wonderful at saving your life in an emergency situation and the only time I’d consider being admitted to one.
The real solution is to maintain your health and immune system by eating a diet full of fresh fruits, vegetables, greens, nuts and seeds, staying active, reducing unneeded stress and avoiding toxic elements in our life. This will allow you to take responsibility for your own health, avoid our health care system and allow you to enjoy a happy and long life.
